Volunteer
A makerspace runs on adults who are willing to sit beside a child and not take the tool out of their hands. Some roles need a trade behind them. Most need patience.
Written honestly, including the time it really takes.
One session a week, 90 minutes
No technical background at all
Sit with children while they build. Hand out materials, hold things steady, ask what they are making. The most useful thing you can do is notice the child who has gone quiet and is stuck.
A four-week cohort at a time
Engineering, trades, design, or teaching background
Run a module from a written session plan. You are not inventing curriculum — it exists, with objectives and a finished project. You bring the judgement about when to help and when to let something fail.
Ad hoc, a few hours a month
You are the person who repairs things at home
Keep the 3D printers printing and the tools sharp. Unglamorous, endlessly valuable, and the single easiest way for a maker to help a makerspace.
Roughly six meetings a year
Finance, education, community leadership, or fundraising
Govern the organisation, approve the budget, and hold the founders to account. We especially need a Treasurer with an accounting background and someone connected to local schools.
Everyone working with children completes a police vulnerable-sector check before their first session. We pay for it. You will also be asked to read our child protection policy and sign that you have understood it.
No volunteer is ever alone with a child. That is not a comment on you — it protects the children and it protects you.
Airdrie Maker Lab is being built, so we are not scheduling volunteers into sessions this minute. What we are doing is building the list of people we will call first.
Board recruitment is the exception — that is live now and it is the most useful thing anyone can offer us today.
